On April 28, Tracy Douglas-Blowers, AHLA’s Director of Membership & Industry Relations, made a presentation on “The Pandemic Experience of Alberta Hotels” to over 200 municipal tax assessors at the Alberta Assessors’ Association’s annual conference. Municipal assessors measure value on all types of properties and improvements, including hotels, for municipal tax rolls.
The conference was an excellent opportunity to inform assessors about the impact the pandemic lockdown and subsequent public health restrictions had on hotels, as well as factors that will drive revenues and expenses as the industry recovers, including:
- Staffing
- Insurance
- Short term rentals
“In some communities, occupancy has started the long march to recovery, but across the province, we have a long, long way to go. It’s critical that assessors understand the environment Alberta hotels are operating in, and the headwinds AHLA members face as we turn towards recovery. We appreciate the AAA’s invitation to connect with municipal assessors from around the province.”
