On November 24, Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland introduced legislation to enact the Tourism and Hospitality Relief Program (THRP)the first piece of legislation introduced in the House Commons by the new Liberal Government.

If passed, this bill would deliver targeted support to businesses through:

  • The Tourism and Hospitality Recovery Program, which would provide support through wage and rent subsidies to hotels, with a subsidy rate of up to 75%.
  • The Hardest-Hit Business Recovery Program, which would provide support through wage and rent subsidies to other businesses that have faced deep losses, with a subsidy rate of up to 50%.
  • A Local Lockdown Program, which would provide businesses that face temporary new local lockdowns up to the maximum amount available through the wage and rent subsidy programs.
  • An extension of the Canada Recovery Hiring Program until May 7, 2022, for eligible employers with current revenue losses above 10% and increase the subsidy rate to 50%.

The Hotel Association of Canada (HAC) and the Coalition of Hardest Hit Businesses have been central to driving this work on behalf of the sector, but they need your help. Please reach out to your Member of Parliament (MP) to encourage them to support this important legislation and explain what it would mean for your hotel.
