As a result of the fourth wave of COVID-19 and the public health state of emergency in Alberta, hotels are experiencing room cancellations and a significant drop in bookings and consumer confidence. The AHLA is asking the the Minister of Jobs, Economy, and Innovation to extend the Tourism Levy to March 31, 2022, as a critical liquidity measure for hotels.

Hotels have experienced an almost 50% decrease in revenues as compared to 2019. The Revenue Per Available Room (RevPAR) for hotels in all regions of the province is still well below 2019 RevPAR levels and the threshold required for positive cash flow.

The AHLA has recommended against imposing a revenue loss threshold for the abatement because it would exclude new hotels and those still in need of support due to increased operating costs. The process for implementing and managing a revenue loss threshold would also require considerable resources and adminsitration by government and our members.
