Last week, AHLA President & CEO Dave Kaiser asked tax assessors for leniency when dealing with hotels during COVID-19. At one of the Canadian Property Tax Association’s (CPTA) annual education sessions for the Western Chapter, Kaiser highlighted:

  • the challenges hotels were already facing before the pandemic,
  • the devastating impacts of COVID-19 on hotel RevPAR and operating cash flow, and
  • the importance of government relief programs and lender cooperation to support business liquidity.

“This was great opportunity to inform and educate property tax assessors as Alberta hotels face the challenging road to recovery,” said Kaiser.  “Most importantly, it was an opportunity to advocate for adjusted hotel valuations and lower property tax assessments going forward.”

One hundred and sixty members of the CPTA attended the session, with 75% of the delegates from Alberta.
