Update: AHLA members successfully advocated for a further temporary layoff extension to June 30, 2021.

The AHLA asked the Minister of Labour for a variance extending temporary layoffs for members who told us they have not yet been able to recall employees laid off earlier this year as a result of COVID-19.

The Minister has extended the deadline for temporary layoffs to March 31, 2021. This will allow you to maintain employment relationships with your staff and delay potentially devastating termination costs.

The Order includes a number of terms and conditions, including:

  • A copy of the Order must be provided to the affected employees. You can access the Order here.
  • Employers must comply with all other provisions of the Employment Standards Code and Regulations, as well the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Regulation, and Code. If you have questions or need support with your property’s health & safety program, please contact us at safety@ahla.ca.

This is another huge win for AHLA members, made possible because hotels worked together through the AHLA to find a solution that meets the needs of employers and employees. Thank you for letting us be your voice to government.
