The AHLA has been working with Alberta Labour and Immigration to extend temporary layoff rules for our members.
We are pleased to announce that our request has been approved, and that a Ministerial Order has been issued to extend temporary layoffs for AHLA members to the end of 2020. This extension will allow AHLA members to maintain employment relationships with their staff and delay potentially devastating termination costs.
This is a huge win for AHLA members. Having a strong voice with government has never been more important. This decision by the Minister underscores the importance of having an industry association where hotels can work together and build effective relationships with government.
The Ministerial Order is in effect until December 31, 2020 and includes a number of terms and conditions, including:
- A copy of the Order must be provided to the affected employees
- Employers must comply with all other provisions of the Employment Standards Code and Regulations, as well the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Regulation, and Code. If you have questions or need support with your property’s health & safety program, please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
To be included on the Ministerial Order, AHLA members must provide their legal name. If you have not already done so, please email Tracy Douglas-Blowers. Be sure to notify affected employees in writing and provide them with a copy of the Ministerial Order. You can see a sample layoff letter here (pdf download).
