Starting later in 2020, all Alberta accommodation providers, including short-term rentals, will be required to pay the four per cent Tourism Levy, as stated on pages 175-6 in the 2020 provincial budget.

The AHLA applauds the government on this positive first step to fair rules for short-term rentals, and will continue to work with the Hotel Association of Canada (HAC) on this issue.

“We are pleased that the Government of Alberta is taking steps to level the playing field for accommodation providers in the province,” said AHLA Board Chair Leanne Shaw. “The AHLA will continue to work with local hotel associations in Edmonton and Calgary to call for changes that address the impact of commercial short-term rentals on their neighbours and on the municipal property tax base.”
