Alberta's Minimum Wage
Minimum wage was first linked to Alberta’s average weekly earnings in June 2007. On April 1, 2008, Alberta’s minimum wage increased from $8 to $8.40. Government policy currently states that if Alberta’s average weekly earnings remain the same or decrease from one year to the next, the minimum wage will remain the same. The Honourable Thomas Lukaszuk, Minister of Employment & Immigration, is currently reviewing this policy. The AHLA will ensure that the views of the hospitality industry are represented at this review.
The majority of Alberta’s 20,000 minimum wage earners are 15 - 19 years old and work in the accommodation and food services industry.
