Housekeeping Awards

With the support of Travel Alberta and the Government of Alberta, the Alberta Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA) has presented the Housekeeping Award since 1983.

Alberta hotels & motels participating in the Check In Canada program are considered for the Housekeeping Award. The recipients are selected based on a number of criteria, potentially including unannounced inspections, social media, and a detailed breakdown of TrustScores. 

The awards have gotten a facelift. Based on your feedback, we have created a new visual identity for the Housekeeping Award, with graphics and resources that will help you tell your guests and staff about your achievement. 

With the support of Alberta Culture and Tourism, 2015 Housekeeping Award winners will receive:

·         An icon on their Check In Canada and 2015 Accommodation Guide listing;

·         Logos for use in their promotional materials and website;

·         Standardized artwork to use for tent cards and promotional materials;

·         TV stills for lobby monitors and guest rooms;

·         An icon to use on their social media accounts;

·         A news release template to help you announce your award; and

·         Videos that will help tell guests and staff about this hard-earned accomplishment.

These resources are available on our new Housekeeping Award website, including a video to help you train your staff about the importance of cleanliness and maintenance required to make your property stand out.


The following criteria will be used to identify 2016 Housekeeping Award recipients:

  1. All properties considered for a Housekeeping Award must comply with the Health CodeFire Code, and section 7 of the Innkeepers Act. Properties must have been in operation for three months.
     
  2. All properties listed on Check In Canada will be considered for a Housekeeping Award.
     
  3. No application will be required. It has always been a requirement for properties to be listed in the Official Alberta Accommodation Guide in order for them to be considered for a Housekeeping Award. As use of the internet to research and book travel grows, this requirement is being extended to www.CheckInCanada.com. Additional information may be provided by your property or requested by the AHLA, such as the date of last renovation and results of brand inspections.
     
  4. A combination of TrustScore™ data pertaining to cleanliness, maintenance & state of repair, consumer reviews, physical inspections at selected properties, and complaints received by the AHLA will be used to determine eligibility for a Housekeeping Award. The AHLA will conduct a number of unannounced inspections each year. The results of these will be considered as part of the Housekeeping Award selection process; however inspections are no longer the only factor considered in identifying Housekeeping Award recipients. 
     
  5. Historically, the AHLA inspected more than 700 hotels and motels around the province each year. Properties were only considered for a Housekeeping Award if a quality assurance advisor was able to inspect at least 5 guest rooms when they arrived. Using consumer reviews and TrustScore data enables us to consider properties that might not have had rooms to show when the inspector arrived, or that might not have received an inspection in a given year if the inspector had already visited their community. A subset of TrustScore™ data will be used to evaluate consumer feedback on the following elements only:

Considering consumer reviews and a detailed breakdown of TrustScore™ data as well as the results of unannounced inspections helps the AHLA to see a property as its guests do. The inherently subjective nature of consumer reviews is considered during the Housekeeping Award selection process. Management responses to positive and negative reviews are also considered. Incorporating consumer reviews and specific TrustScore components such as bathroom cleanliness, housekeeping, and room cleanliness, allows the AHLA to get a more comprehensive view of how consumers see a property than relying on a brief annual visit.

Properties selected to receive a Housekeeping Award will demonstrate an overall trend of excellence in cleanliness, maintenance, and state of repair.

The 2016 Housekeeping Awards will be presented Monday, April 18, 2016 at The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise.
