By the 1920s, millions of dollars had gone into hotel construction in Alberta, and our province had some of the finest properties in the country. Hotels were gathering places and major employers in many communities.
In the summer of 1920, a group of hoteliers set out the terms and conditions by which a new association would be governed. In 1922, the Alberta Hotel Association was formed to address liquor licensing and prohibition, lobby government particularly on taxation, improve the image of hoteliers in their communities, reduce rivalry in the hotel industry and establish common policies on staffing including training, hours of work and security.
Over the next 88 years, this association would do far more than influence government. The organization these hoteliers created would eventually expand to unify the tourism and hospitality industry and legitimize our industry as an important contributor to Alberta's culture and economy.
The Alberta Hotel & Lodging Association is a non-profit organization which represents a broad cross section of Alberta's accommodation and tourism industry. Our association is governed by a Board of Directors elected from member properties throughout Alberta.
Our members are owners and operators of hotels, motels, inns, resorts, bed and breakfasts, lodges, campgrounds and company suppliers to the tourism industry. AHLA members play an active role in determining the policies and objectives of AHLA and have an essential voice in the affairs of the association and the direction taken on current issues.
